Where is the place that my thought rests

Where is the place that my thought rests?
Where will be the place that gladdens my desire?
I measure all depths with a sounding-lead, then I feel,
and I can't find a harbour where I dare rest.

What sheltered me before from all winds
is now for me a cruel and deserted beach.
I feel lost in the house I know so well,
I find great labour where I once was idle.

Where is the joy I had when I thought
I was loved by the one who understood me?
All my desire, and hers did not prevent me
from loving, for her power was enough.

Oh foolish love, he that wants to love a woman
for her virtue takes a great risk:
her quality and place make her good,
but, which is the one who lives within reason?

Nothing in this world can defend me against suffering;
all my joy of living has already gone;
I can write to my friends about sadness,
and I lack time to be able to overcome it.

Oh foolish love, he that wants to love a woman
for her virtue takes a great risk:
her quality and place make her good,
but, which is the one who lives within reason?

Where is the place that my thought rests?
Where will be the place that gladdens my will?
I measure all depths with a sounding-lead, then I feel,
and I can't find a harbour where I dare rest.
