Stars are made in different ways. For soaring pop balladeer Aiman Tino, music was a pastime to enjoy with his father Yusri Ishak, a singer and songwriter in his own right. However, it soon become his calling—Tino’s breakout hit of 2016, “Ku Rela Dibenci”, was written by his parents (Yusri and wife Riena) and modestly shared online. After triggering an avalanche of views, Tino wound up on the Aries Music radar, and the label helped to turn him into an overnight sensation. With its dramatic and searing chorus, “Ku Rela Dibenci” is primed for karaoke sing-alongs, fusing wind-in-your-hair guitars with theatrical strings and glass-shattering vocals. His fate was sealed. Tino poured out heartbreak vocal anthems with a retro 1980s Malay pop twist for the next two years. Subsequent singles “Permata Cinta”, “Terlerai Sebuah Janji” and “Ku Sesat Dalam Rindu” continued to hit that sweet spot between pop and rock, with Tino crooning and storming his way through epic piano runs, booming drums and electrifying guitars that have tirelessly proven popular among his ardent fanbase. From an extracurricular project that began without direction, Aiman has blossomed into one of Malaysian music’s most recognisable heartthrobs. A health scare affecting his vocal cords may have slowed him down temporarily in late 2018, but new singles and acting appearances on local TV series and telemovies have kept his star shining brightly.
