Although she had been in jazz for a few years, Angela DeNiro's "break" came when she met her husband-to-be, Ron Aprea. Aprea, already a veteran of such big bands as Woody Herman, Les Elgart, Tito Puente and Frank Foster, was performing with the Skitch Henderson Orchestra when he got a call to work with the band DeNiro was performing with. The rest is history, as they say. Aprea's big band became the musical backdrop for both her albums, the 1996Just for the Fun of It and the more recent 1998 release Swingin' with Legends. The latter album appropriately featured such legends as Frank Foster, Lew Tabackin and the celebrated Lionel Hampton. DeNiro, with a music degree from C.W. Post University, has performed with numerous top flight contemporary jazz musicians since 1988. With her quintet, she was featured with Arvell Shaw's Louis Armstrong Legacy Band. She joined such luminaries as Freddie Cole, Ethel Ennis, Diana Krall, at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Boise, Idaho where she sang with the Kenny Barron Trio and Hampton's Big Band. Blessed with good pitch and phrasing, an intuitive feel for swing and married to a very talented musician in his own right, DeNiro is one of the brighter, vocally precocious talents in the business. ~ Dave Nathan
