Acerca de Evelyn Thomas
An ex-gospel singer blessed with a bluesy voice, Evelyn Thomas first emerged in the disco world in the late 1970s, but it was the 1984 hit “High Energy” that earned her a permanent location in dance music lore. Thomas also had a long, illustrious career beyond her signature hit, as her elastic, soulful vocals fit everything from soul-jazz to torch songs to the swirling, pulsating disco for which she's best known.
Thomas was discovered in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois by British songwriter, producer and DJ Ian Levine in 1975. Levine had come to America to discover talent for his newly formed Voltafine Production Company. His goal was to record American soul singers and lease the masters to major recording companies. Impressed by her voice, he cut some tracks with her and secured a deal with 20th Century Records. Levine and Danny Leake produced Thomas' first single, "Weak Spot," which was arranged by Paul Wilson, sold 70,000 copies, and soon entered the U.K.'s Top 50. The success of Thomas' record and others prompted Voltafine to fly their American artists to England to appear on Top of the Pops in hopes of breaking the recordings on Britain's pop charts. Thomas came over with fellow Chicagoans and Voltafine artists Barbara Pennington and L.J. Johnson. The appearances went well but the records never crossed over, nor did they do anything in the States. After returning to Chicago, the trio were soon flown back to England to tour the Northern soul clubs, an endeavor naming them "the Chicago Soul Review", promoted by Terry King. Though Thomas went over well at clubs and the tour drew fans in the northern areas, turnout was low in London proper. The singer's follow-up single, "Doomsday," didn't fare as well as her debut, selling less than half of what "Weak Spot" did. Back in the studio, Thomas recorded two Gloria Gaynor-influenced cuts in "Love Is Not Just an Illusion" and "My Head's in the Stars." Over the years, Thomas proved to be one of Levine's most prolific singers. A number of albums resulted, including The Best of Evelyn Thomas, Have a Little Faith in Me, High Energy, I Wanna Make It on My Own, and Standing at the Crossroads among them. In 1984, "High Energy" soared to the top of the U.S. dance charts and the Top Ten in the U.K. and helped pave the way for the HI-NRG music which would dominate a certain sort of night club for decades. Thomas can also be heard on some Redemption tracks when the group was billed as Redemption Featuring Evelyn Thomas, and her singles are included on many compilation CDs. ~ Andrew Hamilton
