Acerca de Mo Kenney
Delivering midtempo indie pop with illustrative lyrics, Mo Kenney is a singer/songwriter from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She learned guitar at the age of 11 and went on to develop an interest in artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, Led Zeppelin, and Elliott Smith throughout her teens. By the age of 16, she was writing her own songs, her lyrics being influenced by the picturesque nature of director Wes Anderson's films. Shortly after recording some demos at a studio in Halifax, she met fellow Nova Scotia-based musician, Joel Plaskett (formerly of Thrush Hermet) who was impressed with the caliber of her songwriting. Plaskett co-wrote and produced her eponymous debut, which saw release in 2012 via Canadian indie label Pheromone Recordings. The album garnered positive reviews and was nominated for the Rising Star Recording of the Year Award at the East Coast Music Association Awards in 2013. Later that year, the track "Sucker" was awarded the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for Best Song by an Independent Artist. 2013 saw more success for Kenney as she scooped up three Nova Scotia Music awards for Female Artist of the Year, New Artist Recording of the Year, and Pop Recording of the Year before winning the latter at the 2014 ECMA Awards. She released her sophomore effort, In My Dreams, in September 2014. The release boasted a more layered sound palette and sleeker production than the minimal folk of her debut and was once again produced by Plaskett. Kenney went on to promote the album with a nationwide tour and received the ECMA Pop Recording of the Year Award once again. She then got to work on her third full-length -- titled The Details -- which arrived in September 2017. ~ Rob Wacey
