The Brave
Acerca de The Brave
The Brave are an Australian post-hardcore and metalcore quintet from Brisbane. Their songs, at once heavy and hooky, epitomize the group's credo, which is to provoke critical thought and powerful emotion through sound. Over an EP, two singles, and two albums -- including 2016's breakout BBC entry Epoch -- they have become one of Australia's more popular bands, with smaller avid followings in the United States and the U.K. as well.
The band formed in Brisbane in 2013 during the metalcore scene boom, with vocalist Nathan Toussaint and original drummer Luke combing through local Brisbane bands for players. They eventually gathered guitarists Kurt Thomson and Denham Lee, and bassist Daniel Neucom into the fold. After woodshedding and writing for nearly a year, they financed their debut EP, Endless. They toured the country before signing to the Warner Music-affiliated indie label UNFD. At this point, Luke left the band and was replaced by Brent Thomson in the drum chair.
The Brave issued their critically acclaimed debut long-player, Epoch, in 2016, led by the success of the singles "Searchlight," "Endless," and "Break Free." The album ended up in regular rotation at BBC Radio One, enabling the band to play larger venues in Australia. While their first EP showcased the harsher and more explosive dimensions of their sound, Epoch was more nuanced and deliberately accessible. It sacrificed none of the Brave's power, but instead placed it in service to hooks and vamps that resulted in catchier songs that emphasized Toussaint's emotive vocals. 2017's single "Ethereal" was a one-off, showcasing a more progressive element in their songwriting.
In the winter of 2018, the prerelease single "Technicolor" was issued alongside an accompanying music video showcasing the band's new mastery of dynamics with more elaborate songwriting. In April, the full-length Aura was released via UNFD and Rise Records, followed by the single "Ethereal." Both entered the upper half of the streaming metal albums charts. ~ Thom Jurek
