Point the Way
I stumbled in out of the rain in a coffee house in Kazakhstan
Where the wine flows like Syr Darya
And the coffee like it's mud
Didn't know anyone the customs or the language
Didn't know how I got there from the Hudson Valley flood
At the table sat an angel, I just knew he was an angel
But no one stopped to talk to him or pay him any mind
He put his smoke out in his tea
And he told me time's a'wasting
Said he didn't mind the secrecy but he hates to run behind
And I said, I have got a million questions,
That's why I've asked you here today, To point the way.
So I asked about love, and pain, and death
About sacrifice and holiness
I wondered aloud about growing old
And who's gonna win the Superbowl
What was the point, who has the plan?
Did man make god or god make man?
And can anybody, anywhere figure women out at all?
And he said
I have heard a million questions
Only one answer can I say
So ask it slow, this thing you have to know
And I will point the way
I will point the way
I stammered and I stalled with the pressure of it all
And my mind went blank and made a sound
Like someone had left the blender on
And I panicked as I felt my throat formulate and let one go
I said, How am I doing?
He said, Fine and he was gone
Well what would you have done,
All your questions down to one?
No deliberation or preparation
Or searching on the internet
Would you have known just what to do
If it all came down to you?
And could you learn to live with the answer you might get?
We all have so many questions
To almost anyone we'd pray
If they'd point the way
If they'd help point the way
So I sat there in the dark
'Til through the smoke I saw a spark
It was the angel's light of comfort
In a corner, in the back
And he smiled and winked at me
He said, Here, I'll give you one for free
He said, Love it must be learned
And the truth it must be earned
And there never was and never will be
Someone that knows what is to be
But take heart you come equipped
With your own internal script
And if you'd just shut up and listen
You'll hear everything you need
So you go right on asking questions
Let your heart call the play
Every now and then I think I'll stop and check on you
And point the way
I will help point the way
I will point the way
I will help point the way
