The Way It Works
All my trouble seems to start with the very best of intentions
Hurting anybody is the last thing on my mind
It always seems to follow over predictable progression
One steps, two steps, three steps over the line

That's the way it works
Every now and then
Just a beer or two
Turns into ten
And then there's hell to pay
When I get home
That's the way it works
When it don't

Now 20 days a month you can count on me in any weather
And by my calculation that's 80 percent in the clear
But you know the law of averages will kick in sooner or later
And it's one strike, two strikes 3 or 4 times a year

But that's the way it works
Every now and then
Just a beer or two
Turns into ten
And then there's hell to pay
When I get home
That's the way it works
When it don't

But you think 9 to 5 will brittle and grind me down to a house broke man
But those neon lights are hard to fight
Lady can't you understand?

That's the way it works
Every now and then
Just a beer or two
Turns into ten, 12 ,15
And then there's hell to pay
When I get home
That's the way it works
When it don't
That's the way it works
That's the way it works
When it don't
