In praise of money

Money makes wrong into right
and makes a judge an advocate;
it makes a fool a wise man,
if he has got it.
Money does good, money does evil,
money makes man into a devil
or into a saint,
depending on how he uses it.
Money brings quarrels and murmurings,
and insults as well as honours
and it makes the preachers sing:
Beati quorum.
Money makes children happy,
and it makes the priests sing
and the Carmelite friars too,
on great holidays.
Money makes the lean fat,
and the bastards legitimate.
If you say "Have some!" to a deaf man
he soon turns around.
Money makes the sick healthy;
Moors, Jews and Christians,
leaving aside God and all the saints
go and worship money.
Money today rules over the world,
it gives much honour to the fool;
who says "nay" it makes say "aye".
What a miracle!
Therefore of money make quite a pile,
if you can get it, don't let it go;
if you have enough you could become
the Pope of Rome.
