If you ask me the grave torment I suffer,
it is so great that I cannot express it
and it is to be marvelled that ingratitude
being against me, does not pierce me.
I shall never reproach a step of your love,
for as you are honest, following you, I prosper;
but when reason goes against me, I go back,
and without you the world is hardly a present.
Suffering, I cross a river of death by day,
and as I live for you, I grieve that my life will be short.
