Although little known outside his home state for many years, cornetist Cullum has played an important part in preserving interest in traditional jazz in America. He first played in a band led by his namesake father, later taking over leadership and running both the family recording company and a jazz room at San Antonio’s Landing Hotel. Visiting guest musicians or resident old-timers such as Ernie Caceres always fitted in well with the band’s style. Cullum’s records show his band to be a lively, entertaining group with good solos and a tight ensemble sound - what they lack in profundity they certainly make up in spirit.
