About Zuba
The music of the world is combined through the playing of Denver, CO-based quintet Zuba. While rooted in soul and funk, the band's repertoire includes ballads, swamp folk, acid jazz, and modern dance music. High Times dubbed them "stoner band of the month" in February 1997. Performing more than 175 shows a year, Zuba has built a very loyal national following. Their annual appearance at the One World Music Festival in Denver has provided some of the event's most exciting moments. Formed in 1993, Zuba represents the combined vision of founding members Wallace Lester and the single-named Liza. While Lester's rock-steady drumming provides the foundation of the group's sound, Liza's haunting vocals and lightning-fast guitar picking provide its spirit. The group's initial lineup -- which also included lead guitarist Ian Selig, keyboardist/tenor saxophone player Mark Pauperas, and bassist Scott Johnson -- has undergone numerous personnel changes. Zuma added former Chitlin saxophone player Ben Senterfit and ex-Sponge Kingdom bassist Mike Cykoski in 1997. Zuba's greatest exposure has come through their performances on movie soundtracks, including There's Something About Mary, Say You'll Be Mine, the Farrelly Brothers' Kingpin, and Warren Miller's Snowriders. The group's first three albums, released on their own Cool Therapy label, sold more than 18,000 units. ~ Craig Harris
