b. 1954, Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Spain. A professional musician from early teenage, Fernández studied piano in Spain, France and Germany. He impressed through his free playing and through the 80s and 90s collaborated often with Carlos Santos and Jordi Benito and later with Andres Corchero. Fernández is co-founder of various experimental groups. In 2000 he teamed up with Butch Morris and the following year played with Jane Rigler, then with Pep Llopis. Through the early 00s, Fernándezs own quartet was active, including work with Tomas Aragay. Fernández has also been a member of Slow.nn Fernández co-directed with Barbara Held the International Music Experimental Metrònom in the late 90s and in the early 00s was director in Barcelona of several improvised music events. For some years, Fernández has been professor of improvisation at Escola Superior de Musica de Cataluña. Artists with whom Fernández has performed include Derek Bailey, Tom Cora, Marilyn Crispell, Dani Domínguez, Mats Gustafsson, Barry Guy, Christoph Irmer, Peter Kowald, David Mengual, Tony Oxley, Evan Parker, William Parker, Wolfgang Reisinger, Matthew Shipp and David Xirgu. Fernández has appeared in Madrid, New York, London, Glasgow, Paris and Berlin. He has also composed for film, television and theatre.
