Dreaming of a Better Place

You were ten and I was twelve
We sat upon your neighbours wall
I rubbed your shoulders as you cried
And made sure that you didn't fall

You said that you had had enough
Said you need to run away
Father drank enough for two
And gave your mom a swollen face
And every time you cried at that, your parents knew you were sick of them

You decided you would visit the stars
Drowned out by the faintest street lights
We walked down to the soccer fields
So you could see the stars at night

We chose where you would build a home
Raise a normal family
Build a treehouse in the branches
Of your gardens tallest tree
And every time you smiled at that, your parents knew you were sick of them

Now you've been waiting for
The perfect time to run, you've left your backpack by the door
And every time you fall asleep at night you have the same dreams of a better place

At fourteen you went off to high school
You knew it was the kind of place
Where you might make some other friends
Who's moms might have a swollen face

We'd meet out round the back of school
Try and smoke the days away
We'd steal some of daddy's booze
And drink it just to numb the pain
And every time they smelled your breathe, your parents knew you were sick of them

One day when you got home
Your mother, she had finally left
And in his fit of anger
Daddy did what daddy knows the best

He emptied all his best carafes
Drank his most expensive wines
Gave you the same swollen face
You truly had your mothers eyes
And I hope that heart attack he had was proof that you were sick of him

Now you've been waiting for
The perfect time to run, you've left your backpack by the door
And every time you fall asleep at night you have the same dreams of a better place

But don't be scared no more
The worst is finally over and it won't feel like before
But every time you fall asleep at night, you're still dreaming of a better place

I wore black and you wore white
You said it made you feel pure
But pure was just the worst of words
To describe anything you were

I'd always thought it was unfair
That all your dreams were beaten down
And now you have no rush to leave
The stars will always be around
And we'll leave a letter on your fathers grave that you've forgiven him

Now you've been waiting for
The perfect time to run, you've left your backpack by the door
And every time you fall asleep at night you have the same dreams of a better place

But don't be scared no more
The worst is finally over and it won't feel like before
But every time you fall asleep at night, you're still dreaming of a better place
