Just How I Loved You

I returned to you a broken man
couldn't begin to understand
it crippled me slowly through years of abuse
each day until now I've looked for excuses to see you, to admit that I need you
thought I was a poet, but I was a poser, a paled in comparison version of someone much wiser and bolder
but now that it's over, after ignoring the questions inside for so long
we can try to make it alright
I'm beginning to think I'm too old for the fight, so you know that

Just how I loved you, that's how I left you
holding back something so I could forget you
doing my best to keep you in the dark
so I could go back to the day that I met you
Just how I loved you, that's how I left you
thought if I lost you I'd never regret you
but I was wrong to keep you in the dark
I should've known I could never forget you

There are times when we disagree
and you're reminded of the child I can be
expecting the world just to fall at my feet
up in the clouds, not a thought for the people around me
is there nothing can ground me?
cause I have a feeling I'm bound for disaster
if life is a question then maybe it's you that I need for the answer
I'm getting closer, I look in the mirror to find that it's someone that I recognise
I promise to try and leave you without any reason to doubt, til you know that

Just how I loved you, that's how I left you
holding back something so I could forget you
doing my best to keep you in the dark
so I could go back to the day that I met you
Just how I loved you, that's how I left you
thought if I lost you I'd never regret you
but I was wrong to keep you in the dark
I should've known I could never forget you
