Pennies and Apples
November quickly slips into December
My days rush by too fast
The holiday season is here again
Somehow I yearn for the past
When it was simple to meet expectations
An easy time to bring on a smile
No devices to always be checking
Three channels to tune on the dial
House decked out with candles
Fresh greens and a tree
Little children - their eyes open wide
Sitting on Santa's knee
Pennies and Apples filled my stocking
We sang carols; kin came aknocking
Brother and sister father and mother
Gathered round tables to be with each other
The season's way more than shopping and stresses
Deeper than tinsel or holiday dresses
More than trite greetings or worn out regards
Sent out in bulk in mass produced cards
Holiday spirit requires deep reflection
To accept in ourselves that human connection
When did Christmas balloon into a season
That starts before Halloween
Where shopping for gifts became the main reason
And Good Tidings were lost in between?
When did holiday feelings become
Blinking lights and bright decorations?
When did gift cards and loud party fun
Take the place of our alms and oblations
The season's way more than shopping and stresses
Deeper than tinsel or holiday dresses
More than trite greetings or worn out regards
Sent out in bulk in mass produced cards
Holiday spirit requires deep reflection
To accept in ourselves that human connection
Do you accept that connection?
