The night was dark and cold the rain was falling down
And on the road a soldier walked just thirty miles from town
Though the cold wind chilled him to the very bone
He looked up to the skies and smiled just thirty miles from home

Soon I'll see Mary I missed her so
I'll be home for thirty days just twenty miles to go

He saw the lights of a collar approaching from the rear
He turned and raised a trembling hand as he passed so near
But no one would pick a soldier up on the road alone
Just fifteen miles from home fifteen miles from home

Soon I'll see Mary I missed her so
I'll be home for thirty days just ten miles to go

But early next morning the soldier boy was found
They say he's stopped to lie and rest upon that frozen ground
A hundred cars had passed him by walking on the road alone
But no one would pick a soldier up just five miles from home
