Ordinary Things

Talking you are with me
Talking ordinary things
Are lifted up when I'm with you
Days and nights through my mind
Seems like every word I find
Is picking me up when I'm with you

An old bedroom painted blue
Two framed photos on a wire
Rain that splashes on a stone
Half window, half a view,
Your half answer when I call
As near to heaven as I've known

This is the hour we're watching
Another minute passing
A string of evenings every window is open wide.
Just like an ocean across my back
Just like an ocean down my neck
How would I spend my time with anybody else?

A stranger's dress orange-checked,
A purple shine in a pigeon's neck
A green-skinned lemon in a tree
A rattling train on its rails
Tobacco underneath your nails
An afternoon watching the sea.

This is the hour we're watching
Another minute passing
A string of mornings every front door is open wide.
Just like an ocean across my back
Just like an ocean down my neck
How would I spend my time with anybody else?
