On This Pier

About a quarter-mile long from the shoreline to the end way out here
Just down the street from the waterslide and the places people gather to have a beer
You can see the crowds on the boulevard eating ice cream as they make their way through the endless fascinations offered here
On their way to spend a little time out here on this pier
You start at the pavilion drawn in by the carnival atmosphere
Where arcade games are ringing and the smell of cotton candy fills the air
Until you step out on that wooden walk greeting travelers who live both far and near
Congregating for a little while out here on this pier
Seasons come and seasons go
The old man cling to their fishing poles
As newlyweds plan out their coming years
You rarely find an idle mind as weathered wood soaks in the thoughts
Of anyone whose ever been out here
Just a melting pot of humankind entangled out here on this pier
On the crowded beach below summer plays out as it does from year to year pretty girls with golden skin smile as they drive the boys in sane
And children build their castles in the sand that will only disappear
By the rising tide of water that is rolling underneath this pier
Seasons come and seasons go
The old man cling to their fishing poles
As newlyweds plan out their coming years
You really find an idle mind is weathered wood soaks in the thoughts
Of anyone whose ever been out here
Pondering the meaning of it all out here on this pier
About a quarter-mile long from the shoreline to the end way out here
It's a place I often come to when I need to rest my heart and see things clear
As the waves crash up on the sand I gaze out at the water without fear
To see the hand of God in motion and unending out here on this pier
To see the hand of God in motion and unending out here on the pier
