The Night We Broke All the Ice

So in the night he lay down with the girl and made her his wife
She asked for meat and for drink, and they gave them to her
It seemed as if the whole land was moving around
Every move and every thought was a moaning
And so he set off, and he left the bright world and entered the dark one
He walked along in the dark, and soon he heard noise and thunder
And when he got home, he had grown old
The stunted willow whipped him, he said, O well, grandfather
Do not kill me so soon. I want first to say goodbye to the sun, my good friend
And while we're saying farewell, that will give you more time to sharpen your hatchet
I want a clean cut, a fast break, short death. It feels like the Earth is vanishing from view
Just like the night we broke all the ice on the sea

When time called for him, he went up on a moon beam, he felt much fear
He came to the heavens. The heavens looked like firm ground with long shadows
And then he saw his wife, he said, well, now, we are from different lands
And you are no longer homeless, you have your own country
Maybe you should go back, I will pack food and send you away
With shelter that moves and strong reindeer. He packed her snacks to carry
Something deep in her body was grinding its teeth like a wolf
