The Liar

Well I've been running for so long I can hardly stand
And I've been looking for someone I can hardly stand
If you're a builder, a painter, a pirate
If you're a cipher, a digger or diver
I'm jealous of you
Because the world is cruel for a liar

It started when I was a twinkle in my mummy's eye
She said to my daddy "It's ok, 'cause it's not my time"
So it was from a lie I was conceived
It's on to a lie I'll be received
I'm jealous of you
Because there's no peace of mind for a liar

Lying's an art
Without any heart
Gets into your deep, dark soul
And drinks 'til it's dry

At school I learned to play the deceitful ace
I rose to the top on a mountain of bullshit grace
A nudge, a wink, a stick or a twist
The hand that you're dealt should have been better than this
So you shuffle the deck
And play it again as a liar

Lying's an art
Without any heart
Gets into your deep, dark soul
And drinks 'til it's dry

I sit on the 100th floor of this steel and glass
I light a cigar, I puff and I think of the past
If you're a carer, a doctor or butcher
If you're a farmer, a dreamer or boxer
I'm jealous of you
Because you're much better off than a liar

Lying's an art
Without any heart
Gets into your deep, dark soul
And drinks 'til it's dry
