Atxiketan potxiketan

While playing downtown in Elorrio,
fourteen old ladies appeared, playing the trumpet,
seated in seven donkeys.

The donkeys were rather small and,
instead, the old ladies were tremendous.
For mighty God how could they fit there butts there!

Sells candy for a penny
this is well, says the confectioner.

When we go to Otxandiano,
the day of Santa Marina,
we'll drink chocolate in front of Vulcano.

Sells candy for a penny
this is well, says the confectioner.

There are some young ladies from San Sebastian who
takes afternoon walks on the holidays,
also they have a boyfriend, three wafers sellers,
seven soldiers and two policemen.

In our group, in our group
many drunks abound, singles
and with no intention to marry at all,
not now nor ever!

For God sakes, why do I have to marry.
I rather live unmarried than married.
For God sakes, why do I have to marry.
I prefer to be a bachelor than married.

The Basque songbook is much given to mixing themes, melodies, languages and everything. Elorrio, Otxandio, San Sebastian, ladies, mules, butts, trumpets, Saint Marina, Vulcano, candy, ladies, chocolate, waffle makers, soldiers, police... And finally, single ladies and bachelors. How well did we live when we are all one! That is, at that point when we are one.
